Learning from the data: The practise of data analysis

Vorlesung "Learning from the data: The practise of data analysis" (in englischer Sprache) von Dr. hab. Michal Myck

Data analysis has become a cornerstone of academic and market research and the key to understanding of major socio-economic developments. This course will introduce the basic concepts and methods in analysis of micro-level data, i.e. data at the level of the individual, the household or the firm. The focus will be on correct approach to data analysis and interpretation in a multi-variate regression context.

The course will start with a brief and non-technical theoretical introduction to the analysis of micro data and go on to discuss how such data is and should be handled in practise. A lot of emphasis will be placed on the assumptions made for the correct interpretation of results and on common errors made in data analysis.

We will discuss the distinction between correlation and causality and the implications of this interpretation in practical applications. Students will be presented with specific examples of regression analysis and taught to interpret them correctly. Examples from applied economics literature will be discussed in detail to demonstrate and discuss the challenges of empirical analysis. The course should equip the students with the necessary knowledge to analyse micro-level data in their own academic work as well as in future business applications.

The course will include input from students based on examples of analysis of datasets which they may use for their thesis, their own research or simply for practise.

24 hours of lectures and classes will be blocked into three teaching sessions and the course will include individual online sessions devoted to discussion of students’ projects.

One day introductory session:

22.11.2019: 10.00-12.15 + 13.30-15.45

Two day main session:

28.11.2019: 10.00-12.15 + 13.30-15.45

29.11.2019: 10.00-12.15 + 13.30-15.45

One day final session:

10.01.2020: 10.00-12.15 + 13.30-15.45
