The Seal of the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Law and Economics
The seal of the Faculty of Law and Economics in its current form is of a circular shape. An upright griffin, Pomerania’s heraldic animal stands in the middle, striding to the left. In its right raised front claw it holds a sword, in its extended left claw the scales of justice.
The image of the griffin is surrounded on the outer rim by the inscription in Roman capitals which was changed when the Faculty of Law was expanded and renamed Faculty of Law and Economics in 1915.
On the bottom left-hand side, to the left of the griffin, is the year in which the University and its Faculty of Law was founded in 1456. Imprinted on the right-hand side is the year in which the Faculty of Law and Economics was added in 1915.
The inscription starting from centre bottom and going left reads as follows: Sigillum Ord (inis) In Univ (ersitate) Gryphi (swald)ensi J(ure) C(onsul) Torum Et Politicorum.
The Prussian Minister of Science and Education (Minister für Wissenschaft, Erziehung und Volksbildung) decreed on 12 June 1937 that the Rectors of universities and the Deans of faculties were only to use the Reichssiegel (Reich seal) as their official seal.
From then on, the historical seals of the universities and faculties could only be used as “ornamental emblems” on diplomas etc. The Faculty of Law and Economics also followed this practice until 1945.
