Rhetoric for Lawyers – Talking Law

Rhetorik für Juristen - Recht reden

Nomos Verlag has published a new book "Rhetorik für Juristen. Recht reden" in the NomosStudium series.

The study of law is dominated by writing and thus written language; students must be able to write expert opinions, examinations or term papers. In contrast, professional legal practice is much more strongly characterised by the spoken word. Legal practitioners must speak in an impact-orientated manner, i.e. with the aim of convincing addressees, and paying attention to body language, speech and language expression. They must also be able to present a credible opinion orally and articulate their own arguments clearly and coherently. In other words, an experienced lawyer must have excellent oral language skills.

The proper handling of legal issues, whether it's during studies or in practice, requires social and communication skills, which are summarised as key qualifications, in addition to the necessary professional expertise. This book aims to impart key communication skills for legal fields of work in an accessible way.

The book addresses the difference between the use of oral and written language, the special requirements of oral communication situations and the ability to express oneself correctly on the one hand, and appropriately for the target audience and taking into account a lack of knowledge on the other. Numerous exercises help with the acquisition of these skills.

The book was written by Thilo Tröger [de]. He has been a permanent teaching and research assistant at the University of Greifswald’s Faculty of Law and Economics since 2001, where he teaches courses on communication techniques, mainly in the law degree course.
