Competence Network Environmental Law

Competence Network Environmental Law (KomUR)

The Network of Competence of Future Challenges of Environmental Law (KomUR) is a joint project by the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research and six German Universities, including the University of Greifswald, represented by the chair of public law, in particular administrative and environmental law held by Prof. Sabine Schlacke. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space for the period from 2023 to 2026. KomUR aims to strengthen collaboration in environmental law research within Germany and, in particular, to expand connections with international partners. The network supports 13 PhDs and fosters academic exchange through a wide range of activities, including international workshops, joint publications and research stay with international partners. The focus of the research activities is on legal comparison in environmental law and the interaction between German and European environmental law.

Especially in September 2025 a workshop was held in Berlin, bringing together leading European environmental law experts from Italy, Portugal, Spain and Sweden to discuss current challenges in environmental law. The workshop focused on legal challenges in European and international law and made a significant contribution to the development legal approaches to global environmental challenges, while further strengthening collaboration within the network. The two research assistants working with Prof. Sabine Schlack on this project are currently in the final stage of their doctoral thesis, which address legal issues relating to sustainable energy and climate adaptation.
