Science Platform Climate Protection (WPKS)
Prof. Schlacke is a member of the steering committee of the “Science Platform on Climate Protection” (WPKS), which is currently in its second working phase and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR).
Role and Responsibilities of the Steering Committee
The Steering Committee of the Climate Change Scientific Platform is responsible for initiating independent expert assessments, studies, and impact analyses, as well as identifying research needs to support the revision and implementation of the Climate Action Plan 2050. These scientific contributions provide important input toward achieving Germany's climate targets.
To this end, the Climate Change Scientific Platform prepares position papers and statements and commissions studies and analyses. In addition, it may propose the awarding of research contracts or recommend the establishment of new research programs. Its overarching objective is to evaluate climate policy instruments across all sectors with regard to their effectiveness in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, their costs and other impacts, as well as their economic and social opportunities and risks.
Composition of the Steering Committee
During its second funding period (1 July 2024 – 30 June 2027), the Climate Change Scientific Platform is guided by an interdisciplinary Steering Committee comprising four researchers from renowned research institutes. All four members previously served on the Steering Committee during the first funding period (2019–2023) and are continuing their mandate.
At the inaugural event of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), they were formally appointed to the Steering Committee by the Federal Minister of Education and Research, Bettina Stark-Watzinger.
