Advanced Economics
Specialisation - Economic Growth, Structural Change and Trade
Overview
The specialisation "Economic Growth, Structural Change and Trade" examines the dynamic development of economies with a special focus on business cycles and ecological and foreign trade aspects.
Various facets of economic development will be examined. We will be looking at socio-economic characteristics (“Development Economics”), geographical and regional elements (“Regional Economics”), the possibilities and limits of growth (“Endogenous Growth and Sustainable Development”) and macroeconomics from a New Keynesian perspective (New Keynesian macroeconomics and growth).
The lectures "Business Cycles and Economic Growth" and "Development Economics", as well as a tutorial, are usually held during the winter semester. The lectures "Regional Economics" and "Endogenous Growth and Sustainability", as well as a seminar, usually take place during the summer semester.

In this lecture we will be asking why we can afford so much more than our grandparents and why income growth is not steady but subject to economic fluctuations. In addition, we will be investigating why economic growth is not proceeding at the same pace across all countries, but growing more slowly in some parts of the world. In view of a finite supply of non-renewable resources, we also address the question of whether our income can continue to grow indefinitely, or whether economic growth will have to decline at some point, due to a lack of affordable energy.
