In this lecture we will be asking why we can afford so much more than our grandparents and why income growth is not steady but subject to economic fluctuations. In addition, we will be investigating why economic growth is not proceeding at the same pace across all countries, but growing more slowly in some parts of the world. In view of a finite supply of non-renewable resources, we also address the question of whether our income can continue to grow indefinitely, or whether economic growth will have to decline at some point, due to a lack of affordable energy. The lecture "Business Cycles and Economic Growth" also counts as an introductory lecture to the specialization "Economic Growth, Structural Change and Trade".

The German economy is strongly integrated globally. Whereas many people benefit, others are staunch opponents of globalization. In this lecture we examine the reasons for this. We show that international trade benefits all participating nations when factor endowments or production technologies differ. That is the reason, why we import oranges from Spain and beef from Argentina. We also explain, how factor income distribution affects international trade. In Germany, for example, international trade has caused lower wages for low-skilled workers. We also explain that economies of scale in production mean that a large part of trade within the EU is intra-sectoral, i.e. similar goods are traded.
