Science Platform Climate Protection (WPKS)
In June 2019, the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) established the Science Platform Climate Protection (WPKS). This initiative is intended to provide the Federal Government with scientific expertise to support the implementation and further development of Germany’s long-term climate strategy.
The science platform is overseen by an interdisciplinary steering committee comprising a maximum of ten representatives from leading scientific research institutions. Currently, the committee has eight members.
Professor Dr. Sabine Schlacke has been part of the steering committee since its launch in 2019 and was elected Chair together with Professor Ottmar Edenhofer.
As an autonomous body, the steering committee will independently initiate expert reports, studies, and impact analyses and identify additional research needs to advance the implementation of the Climate Action Plan 2050 and support it with new impetus.
