Conference: Long-term Imprisonment and Human Rights

The closing conference of our EU project on long-term imprisonment takes place in the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald from 26 to 28 February 2009. This international conference is supported by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung, Essen, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Bonn and the European Commission - Directorate General Freedom, Security and Justice, Brussels.

This conference will be the closing event of the project Long-term Imprisonment and the Issue of Human Rights in Member States of the European Union which the Department of Criminology has been working on for the past two years together with partners from criminological research institutions from ten European countries. The aim of the project is to take stock of the situation of male long-term prisoners in the participating countries, especially of their perception of their living conditions, and of the infrastructure of the prisons that house these prisoners.

The conference will be both a workshop for the whole project group and a meeting that is open for academics and practitioners from the field, which should help to foster discussion within this international group. Findings from the project will be presented in order to discuss and critically evaluate them with the audience and several experts who have not taken part in the project. Based on the discussion, we hope to develop implications for good practices in long-term imprisonment.
