Long-term Imprisonment and the Issue of Human Rights in Member States of the European Union
From 2007 to 2009, a team of the Department and the university's Psychiatric and Psychotherapeutic Clinic did a project on living conditions and conditions of confinement of prisoners serving long sentences. We've worked together with partners from ten European countries.
The heart of this research is a survey among prisoners serving sentences of at least five years of imprisonment or indeterminate sanctions. Participants were asked about their accommodation, health, their activities, correctional treatment, the prison climate and contacts with the outside world. After presenting findings for part of the sample at a conference in Greifswald in February 2009, we've now prepared a short report with selected findings for the whole sample.
