  • 1969: Beginning of studies of law at the University of Heidelberg
  • 1971: Continuation of studies of law at the University of Freiburg (including studies in psychology, 2 years)
  • 1974: First state exam in law in Freiburg
  • 1974: Practical stage at the High Court of Freiburg and research assistant at the Max-Planck-Institute for Foreign and International Penal Law, criminological research unit, with Prof. Dr. Günther Kaiser
  • 1976: Second state exam in law in Stuttgart
  • 1977: Preparation of Ph. D. thesis at the Max-Planck-Institute, Freiburg
  • 1979: Graduation of Ph. D. (Dr.jur.) at the University of Freiburg ("summa cum laude"; subject: "Legalbewährung nach sozialtherapeutischer Behandlung")

  • 2001-2004: Coordinator of a Tempus Project with five Siberian universities.
  • 2001-2004: Manager of the Mare Balticum project on "Juveniles' experiences of violence", "Imprisonment and human rights" and "Explaining imprisonment rates" (with partners in PL, LT, LV, EE, RU, FI, SE, NO).
