C-tests for CEFR Placement? – English Language Placement Testing at the TU Braunschweig

Anthony Brown, Technische Universität Braunschweig

With most study programs only awarding credit points for English language courses at B2 level or above, effective student placement within the CEFR plays a central role. Clearly it is essential that language-learning requirements are adequately assessed in order to facilitate student progress.

However, commercially available placement tests have their drawbacks, often related to their wider-scale application. The English department at the TU Braunschweig have been looking into the possibility of using self-developed C-tests for student placement purposes.
